Court Dissolves Ganduje Daughter’s Marriage, Orders Return Of N50,000 Dowry

and her husband, , were legally divorced by the Upper Shari’ah Court using Islamic procedures known as Khul’I.

Asiya Ganduje, a daughter of the governor of Kano state, requested a divorce from her husband and indicated her willingness to return the N50,000 she received as dowry in a court filing through her attorney, Barrister Ibrahim Aliyu Nassarawa.

Umar I. Umar, a lawyer for the respondent, responded to the plaintiff’s claim by saying that it goes beyond the dowry issue alone and that Asiya was in possession of some properties that belonged to his client.

The evidence presented during the trial, according to the trial judge Mallam Abdullahi Haliru, proved that the plaintiff received the sum of N50,000.

He claimed that the dowry, which is supposed to be the foundation of marriage, served as the basis for the court’s decision.

Asiya was told by the judge to return the N50,000 dowry.

Following the verdict, the respondent’s attorney, Umar I. Umar, addressed the court and requested copies of the proceedings. He also expressed a desire to appeal the decision to the Upper Court.
