Seun Kuti Gets Crowned as he leads prayer session in Prision.
Son of legendary musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, an Afrobeat singer, has been appointed ‘General Overseer’ of his prison cell by fellow inmates at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
As a result of an assault on a police officer, Seun Kuti is currently being held in custody at the facility.
Seun was initially rejected by the inmates when he entered the cell during a tumultuous reception. However, following negotiations and an offer of monetary compensation, the prisoners accepted him as their leader. They even presented him with a Holy Bible as a symbol of his authority.
The incident that led to Seun’s arrest occurred on May 13, when a video of him slapping a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge went viral on the Internet.
The Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, ordered his arrest after the incident. On May 15, Seun later turned himself in to the police accompanied by his legal counsel. He was then brought before the Sabo, Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, which ordered his detention.
When Seun was placed in a cell with other detainees, he encountered opposition from the other detainees. By banging on the protective cell door, they expressed their displeasure and demanded that he be removed from their midst.
However, Seun was able to diffuse the situation by promising to give the inmates N25,000. He immediately contacted his wife, who delivered the money without delay. After payment, the inmates accepted him and even assigned him a designated seating area.
Seun’s anger at the turn of events was evident, as he refused to consume the meals provided to him, including his wife’s food. He went on a hunger strike that lasted nearly a day and a half before he eventually gave up and resumed eating.
The unanticipated climax of the situation occurred when the inmates crowned Seun as the ‘General Overseer’ of the cell and entrusted him with leading their prayer sessions as needed. In response to Seun’s spiritual guidance, the inmates are now chanting “GO, GO” with vigour.
On Friday afternoon, witnesses observed Seun ascending the stairs leading to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, while tightly gripping the Bible given to him. He was then led back downstairs and returned to his cell.
During his time in custody, Seun has received visits from his older brother Femi, other family members, his legal representatives, and a few friends.
The unfolding events within Seun Kuti’s prison cell have added a surprising twist to his current predicament as his legal proceedings continue.
The unexpected turn of events, including his appointment as ‘General Overseer,’ illustrates the complex dynamics of the prison system.
