Sit-at-home: Gunmen kill Police officer, Pawpaw’s brother, injure commissioner

On Friday afternoon, gunmen enforcing a sit-at-home order attacked parts of Owerri, Mbaitoli, and surrounding areas in Imo State.

The gunmen struck at variou s locations and killed a police officer, Prince Iheme, the elder brother of Nollywood superstar, Osita Iheme, also known as Pawpaw.

Martin Eke, the state Commissioner for Solid Minerals, was also macheted by the gunmen.

Gunmen riding in Trundra operational vehicles opened fire indiscriminately, forcing people to flee for safety.

While businesses closed abruptly, the roads were deserted as motorists abandoned their vehicles and fled.

Gunmen in three vehicles attacked residents and passersby, including police officers, in Orji, a community bordering the state capital.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen met police officers at the 7Up junction in Orji and shot one of them dead.

“They just killed a cop now,” he said. They opened fire on them, yelling, ‘There is a sit-at-home.’ We have asked you to leave. ‘Stay inside.'”

“I just escaped death now,” said another eyewitness. They came to a halt in front of us, fired a shot into the air, and asked us to return home. They didn’t shoot at us because I was surrounded by elderly women.”

Our source also learned that the fleeing gunmen fired repeatedly at Nkwo Orji market before fleeing to Okigwe Road.

Gunmen attacked the convoy of Akarachi Amadi, the All Progressives Congress candidate for Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency in Imo State, at Ubommiri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area.

While Prince Iheme was killed on the spot, Martin Eke, the state commissioner for Solid Minerals, was slashed with a machete.

“This attack is politically motivated,” said an eyewitness who did not want to be identified. We had just left one campaign rally site and were on our way to Ubommiri. Before Ubommiri, our convoy was attacked at Amawuihe.

“Prince Iheme was in the same car as the commissioner for solid minerals.” Pawpaw’s elder brother, Prince Iheme, was assassinated on the spot. The commissioner, who has sworn in two weeks ago, was severely underpaid. He was just taken to the hospital. They were in a Ford SUV, and I hope he makes it.”

Micheal Abattam, the command’s police spokesman, had yet to respond to an enquiry about the incidents.
