Soludo Moves to Sack 200 Journalists, Close Government Newspaper

Governor Chukwuma Soludo has decided to close the Anambra State government-owned newspaper publishing company, National Light Newspaper, which employs approximately 200 people.

Soludo was said to have informed members of the State Executive Council (SEC) during their most recent meeting at Government House in Awka that the newspaper company was not adding any value to the government or the state’s economy and thus had to be closed down. Journalists, accountants, printers, security personnel, cleaners, and others were among those employed.

Odogwu had pleaded with the governor not to close the newspaper company, claiming that doing so would make the workers, including journalists and others, unemployed, causing financial hardship for hundreds of their dependents.

The NUJ boss suggested to Soludo that the workers of the newspaper company be redeployed to state ministries where their services would be needed.
