Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has refuted and labelled as false a recent article attributed to him endorsing Labour Party’s presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi.

In a nine-paragraph statement provided to reporters by Mr. Bashir Adefaka, described as a member of the Sultan’s Media Team, in response to the article circulating on social media with the headline “Breaking: Sultan of Sokoto Writes,” the revered monarch stated that it is a hoax.

He stated that a piece attributed to him could not have originated from anywhere near him.

In the discredited statement, the Sultan allegedly said, “Hold me responsible if Peter Obi didn’t perform well, the problem of the North is from the north, not Peter Obi or an Igbo man, it will be worse and more deadly for the North if Tinubu wins, if they tell you an Igbo man is the problem of Nigeria, tell them Igbo men have never ruled Nigeria before and the north is the world’s capital of poverty.”

Adefaka noted that it was not the first time that such misleading statements were disseminated in an effort to score political points using the name of an influential figure or that of the Sultan.

“Unfortunately for these pitiful political campaigners, the Sultan of Sokoto is a traditional ruler and the leader of Muslims in the most populous country in Africa. Moreover, as a retired Army general, his discipline, dedication, and unwavering allegiance to Nigeria are non-negotiable.

” The statement is false because such an irresponsible piece could not have come from anywhere near or around His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, CFR, mni, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA),” Adefaka stated.

He said that between Wednesday and Thursday, the Sultan hosted a number of dignitaries, including the outgoing and incoming General Officers Commanding (GOCs) of the Eighth Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto, Major Generals O. Bassey and Godwin Mutkut, respectively, as well as the Vice Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Kashim Shettima, among others.

“it would be of interest to Nigerians to know that Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Dr. Peter Obi was not among those who visited the palace on Wednesday or Thursday.

How some agents of discord whose livelihood depends on cooking up falsehoods and peddling fake news believe they can get away with this is a mystery to common sense,” he said.

The religious leader challenged those disseminating the hoax to publish a copy of the letter purportedly written by the Sultan or a video or audio clip in which he endorsed Peter Obi and denied APC Presidential Candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as stated in the hoax.

“If they can’t defend it, and they certainly can’t, they should stop using His Eminence’s good name in this indefensible claim and unforgivable lie, because it will backfire,” the Sultan warned.

“It should be made clear to the good people of Nigeria that this, like many others in the past by the Peter Obi campaigners, will not prevent the Sultan from continuing to play his role as a multifaceted leader and father to all.

Consequently, his doors will remain open to all aspirants across all parties and other significant people from across the country.

Adefaka’s statement stated, “More important to Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar at this time and always are the security, peace, and unity of Nigeria, especially as the country is rapidly approaching its long-planned and heavily-invested general elections.”

As the Sultan is not a politician, he advised that “incoherent claims by detractors” be disregarded.
