Supreme Court Declares Godswill Akpabio Authentic APC Senatorial Candidate In A’Ibom

Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and current candidate for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District election, Godswill Akpabio, has been recognized by the Supreme Court as the legitimate representative of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the election for that seat.

An appeal that Akpabio submitted to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal that nullified his candidacy was upheld by Justice Ibrahim in a ruling that was approved by all five members of the panel of Justices that heard the case.

It was read by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa in the lead judgement that the apex court came to the conclusion that the appellate court did not have the authority to intervene in the issue of nomination of a candidate for an election because, according to the apex court, this matter fell under the purview of an internal affair of a political party.

The judgement was read by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa.

The panel of the apex court resolved all ten of Akpabio’s issues in his favor, and as a result, the judgement of the Court of Appeal in Abuja from November 14, 2022 was vacated.

That judgement had directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to recognize Mr. Udom Ekpoudom as the authentic candidate of the APC for the senatorial contest. The apex court panel resolved all of Akpabio’s issues in his favor
