PDP Exploiting Social Media to Intimidate Judges — Supreme Court Sounds Alarm

The Supreme Court has harshly criticised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its use of social media to intimidate its judges.

Justice Inyang Okoro, a member of the Supreme Court, reportedly made this damning accusation while delivering a verdict on Friday.

The case at hand involved an appeal filed by the PDP contesting the election victory of President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on the basis that his running mate, Kashim Shettima, was accused of double nomination.

A five-member panel of the supreme court unanimously rejected the appeal on the grounds that the PDP lacked standing to file such a lawsuit.

Justice Okoro emphasized that the appellant attempted to mislead the court by asserting that the lower court had found double nomination.

“After carefully reviewing the entire case file and the lower court’s ruling, no such finding was discovered,” said Justice Okoro.

“It is disheartening to observe the senior counsel mislead the court in this manner. The use of social media to threaten and intimidate Supreme Court justices is both shocking and unprofessional.

Shettima officially withdrew his nomination for the Borno Central District on July 6, 2022, as evidenced by exhibits presented in court, explained Justice Okoro.

In addition, the judge clarified that the political party notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the withdrawal on the same day. The court emphasized that, contrary to the appellant’s claim, there was no possibility of double nomination on July 14, 2022.

The Supreme Court harshly criticised the PDP’s unprofessional and abhorrent tactics.

Ultimately, the appeal was dismissed for lack of merit. In addition, the court upheld the award of costs as stated in the leading opinion.
