UK govt slams Fani-Kayode over Derogatory comments

 

The United Kingdom has criticised Femi Fani-Kayode, a leader of the All Progressives Congress, for controversial remarks made during the election season.

In an interview with Nigeria Info FM on Sunday, the British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ben Llewellyn-Jones, criticised the director of new media for the APC presidential campaign council for making derogatory remarks.

Fani-Kayode was summoned for questioning by the Department of State Services (DSS) last month for claiming that Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar met with army generals prior to the elections.

 

“Yes, let’s be specific. There were certain individuals, such as Femi Fani-Kayode. What is he saying and why is he saying it? I don’t understand.

“From my perspective, it is improper for him to speak on behalf of a party when that party does not distance itself from him and tell him to stop doing so. That is incorrect,” Llewellyn-Jones stated.

Llewellyn-Jones has reaffirmed that the British government will deny visas to those who undermine democracy.

According to him, approximately ten people are already on the watchlist.

 

“We have a list and are working through it, but those names are not published. I am aware that some say we should, but we have laws that prohibit us from doing so.

 

“The list is currently between 5 and 10 names and is growing,” he added.
