The Rivers State government was charged yesterday when Governor Nyesom Wike quadrupled the number of Special Assistants, SAs, he had just hired to handle political unit affairs.
Wike declared a jump from 100,000 to 200,000 as he officially welcomed the second batch of new SAs from the Rivers East Senatorial District at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area.

The governor defended the action by saying, “My mail box nearly crashed. People are texting each other to ask why you are leaving them alone since the work is too hard.
This number is ineligible for the job. As a result, many residents of Rivers are volunteering to help with this project. We have boosted the amount from 100,000 to 200,000, I can tell you today.
Wike gave the order to all local political leaders to go home and look for reliable people who they believe can help Rivers maintain its prominent place in the community of states.

He emphasized that these SAs on Political Units Affairs were being hired to help his administration conclude properly, saying that even though so much has been accomplished, his administration is not taking its remaining time for granted.
“I am the one appointing. The shoe knows where it pinches because I wear it. Since you do not work for the government, it is not you outside. I have what it takes, and I am confident that these folks can support me. As I draw to a close, I want to do so successfully.
Stomach infrastructures
The appointments, according to Wike, fulfil his promise from the day Rebids I Flyover was dedicated that he would start implementing his stomach infrastructure policy.
He also claimed that the engagement will put money in the hands of Rivers residents.
He reaffirmed their obligation to interact with Rivers residents to learn what they have to say, to evaluate government initiatives and policies and provide feedback to his office via the Constituency and Ward Liaison Officers.
Allowance of N42.127 billion; What their Salary Structure would be- Wike
There were hints yesterday that the 359 Constituency and Local Government Area Liaison Officers’ salaries will remain at N50,000 while the newly hired 200,000 Units SAs will earn a monthly stipend of N30,000.
This means that Rivers would give the appointees N42.127 billion between now and May 29, 2023, when Wike’s term will expire.
The All progressives Congress, APC, National Rescue Movement, NRM, and Niger Delta Peace Coalition among others all criticized the nominations.
