Peter Obi ungrateful, I never worked against him – Wike
Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has denied working against Labour Party candidate Peter Obi in the February 25 presidential election.
He said Peter Obi is ungrateful.
In addition, the governor stated that he never encouraged Rivers residents to vote for President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
On Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, Wike stated this in a media interview with journalists.
He denied allegations that he rigged the Presidential, National Assembly, governorship, and House of Representatives elections in Rivers State to favour his preferred candidates.
According to him, Rivers supported the unity of Nigeria by voting for Tinubu in the presidential election.
He emphasized that his objective from the beginning of the presidential election was clear: the president must be from the South.
He added that he had never opposed Peter Obi.
“I’ve never urged Rivers residents to vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but rather for Nigerian unity.” Regarding Rivers State, there was a shift in power to the south. And there are two candidates from the South: Tinubu and Peter Obi of the Labour Party; therefore, if the majority of Rivers People voted for Tinubu and others voted for Peter Obi, this reveals the citizens’ decision.
“How can you accuse me of election fraud? I am not a member of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s ad hoc staff, so I am not in a position to rig elections for anyone. When you have access to INEC’s materials, you can discuss rigging.
“However, I take exception to Peter Obi’s remark that I came out against him; people are not sincere and grateful. In 2019, I was one of the individuals who voted for Peter Obi over Atiku Abubakar.
“People such as Ike Ekweremadu, my friend the governor of Ebonyi State, and Pius Ayim criticised my decision. Every fault rested with me, so why would I be selected to represent the South East?
“Did he publicly assert that I supported him?
“I told Nigerians I will support a candidate from the South in the upcoming presidential election.
“It’s unfortunate that Peter Obi claims I campaigned against him, because no one ever told me that I did so. It is incorrect to state that I opposed him.
“I told my people to support a southern candidate, and they did; the first and second positions in the Rivers State poll were held by southern candidates.”
Tinubu received 231,591 votes in Rivers State during the 25 February Presidential Election, compared to 175,071 for Peter Obi. Tinubu garnered 8,794,726 votes to win the presidential election after statewide tallying was complete.
