Nigerian govt confirms litigation won’t stop Tinubu’s inauguration

 

The Federal Government stated that litigation will not prevent the inauguration of and Kashim Shettima.

 

On Thursday in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, addressed a news conference.

The Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC) affirmed that the ceremony on May 29 remains sacred.

 

Mustapha stated that after the election of former President Shehu Shagari, there was a court case, but the inauguration still took place.

“There was also litigation during the election of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but we continued with the inauguration.

 

“Only former President Goodluck Jonathan did not pursue legal action,” the SGF explained.

Mustapha stated that the 1999 Constitution and the Electoral Act contained provisions for litigating election-related disputes.

 

However, the PTC chairman revealed that a number of heads of state had expressed interest in attending the inauguration.

 

Meanwhile, A bench warrant has been issued by a high court in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers, against former governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Tonye Cole.

Justice Chinwendu Nwogu issued a bench warrant against Sahara Energy Resources Limited, Chamberlain Peterside, NG powers HPS Limited, and Cenpropsaroten Management Limited in response to a lawsuit filed by the Rivers state government alleging misappropriation of public funds during Amaechi’s tenure as governor of the state from 2007 to 2015.

After Governor Nyesom Wike appointed a seven-member panel in 2022 to investigate Amaechi’s alleged withdrawal of N96 billion from the treasury during his tenure as governor, criminal charges were filed.

They investigated the sale of valuable assets such as the Omoku Gas Turbine, Afam Gas Turbine, Trans Amadi Gas Turbine, Eleme Gas Turbine, Olympia Hotel, and the awarding of the monorail project contract.

 

Despite Amaechi’s insistence that he is innocent of fraud, the supreme court denied his application challenging the investigation.

 

The bench warrant was issued against the defendants because they failed to appear in court to face the criminal charges.
