During a meeting with members of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, the National Chairman of the APC, distanced the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party from the arrangement. He emphasized that the party had not played any role in selecting the lawmakers being touted as principal officers of the National Assembly.

The appointments of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, were announced on Tuesday, following agreements by the caucuses of the majority and minority parties. However, Adamu clarified that the remaining offices’ determination in both chambers was yet to be finalized.

“The election of the principal officers of the Senate by the Senate President and Deputy Senate President. The election of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives have been determined and announced and their responsibilities,” stated Adamu.

While he acknowledged courtesy visits from the Senate President and Deputy, as well as the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, he expressed his surprise at the online media’s unverified reports regarding the announcements of other positions.

Adamu reaffirmed that the national headquarters of the party’s NWC had not issued any official communication about the selection of offices. As per the customary practice, until the party formally resolves and communicates such decisions in writing, there is no intention to deviate from traditions.

The APC’s distancing from the announcements made by the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker, or Deputy Speaker underscores the party’s desire to maintain proper procedures and adherence to established norms. They stress the importance of official communication from the party’s secretariat before considering any announcements as legitimate.

As this dispute unfolds, it may impact the cohesion and dynamics within the National Assembly, potentially leading to further discussions and negotiations to address the concerns raised by the ruling party. The party’s stance highlights the significance of party involvement and cooperation in the selection of principal officers to ensure unity and effectiveness in the legislative processes.
