The Delta State Government has taken a proactive stance in the face of potential flooding risks by forming a specialized committee tasked with addressing and managing flood-related disasters for the year 2023.

 

The newly inaugurated 14-member “2023 Flood Disaster Management Committee” will be at the forefront of safeguarding the interests of the state’s citizens, particularly those residing in coastal communities vulnerable to flooding.

The inauguration of the committee took place in Asaba, with Dr. Kingsley Emu, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), leading the proceedings. Dr. Emu charged the committee members with a critical mission: to sensitize the populace, especially those living in flood-prone regions, about the need to relocate to higher ground as a precautionary measure.

Comprising a diverse group of experts and officials, the committee’s members include Dr. Kingsley Emu as Chairman, Hon. Ejiro Terry (Co-Chairman), Mr. Jamani Ejiro, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, Dr. Kingsley Ashibuogwu, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, Orode Uduaghan, Barr. Funyei Manager, Hon. Victor Ebonka, Chief Jaro Egbo, Barr. Lyna Ocholor, Mr. Karo Ovemeso, Sir Festus Ahon, and Mr. Greg Ejowomu.

During the inaugural meeting, Dr. Kingsley Emu emphasized the gravity of their responsibilities, noting that the welfare of those directly affected by flooding rested in their hands. He underscored that public awareness efforts were already in motion, with informative jingles being broadcast across various media platforms for the past two weeks. These initiatives aim to educate the public about the urgency of relocating from flood-prone areas to evade potential harm.

 

The committee, in addition to their sensitization efforts, has been tasked with proposing and implementing appropriate strategies to prevent and manage flooding incidents.

This includes addressing the displacement of individuals and devising methods for the efficient provision of relief materials to affected victims.
