Edo State Officials Unite Amidst Football Tragedy.
In a commendable display of solidarity, Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, has emphasized that he is not in competition with Governor Godwin Obaseki, putting aside political differences to address a pressing issue. The unity comes in the wake of a harrowing incident involving the attack on players and officials of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure.
The team had encountered a terrifying ordeal when armed robbers targeted their bus along the Ore-Benin Expressway while en route to Benin for a scheduled NPFL match against Bendel Insurance. The attack resulted in a ball boy being shot, with players and officials left traumatized and disoriented.

Deputy Governor Shaibu, moved by the distressing situation, had initially pledged to cover the hospital bills for the affected players and officials. However, in a surprising turn of events, Governor Obaseki independently decided to take on the responsibility of paying the hospital bills for the victims.

Godwin Obaseki, has directed that the medical bill of the injured Ball Boy and Kit Manager of Sunshine Stars FC of Akure be paid by Edo State government. Consequently, the state’s Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, has withdrawn his earlier promise to pay the medical bill.”
The statement emphasized the unity of the offices of the Governor and Deputy Governor, stating, “The office of Governor and Deputy Governor are one. We are not in any way in competition.”
This collaborative effort between Shaibu and Obaseki comes at a time when their relationship has been marked by discord, despite reported attempts at reconciliation.
