Benue State Governor’s Convoy Attacked Amidst Controversy Over Burial Site

In a tumultuous event in the Ugondu community of Makurdi LGA, Benue state, reports emerged of youths assaulting the convoy of the State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, following unrest over the burial arrangements for the late proprietor of Vaatia College, Makurdi, Michael Vaatia.

The uproar erupted due to plans to bury Vaatia within the school premises, situated in the Ugondu community. Enraged youths allegedly hurled stones at the governor’s convoy to express their dissent against this burial decision.

In response, six Ugondu youths were apprehended by law enforcement for pelting the governor’s convoy with objects during the protest.

Governor Alia had visited Vaatia College to assess preparations for the burial of the deceased proprietor, Michael Vaatia.

The situation escalated when irate youths from the Ugondu community reportedly stormed the school, disrupting proceedings and damaging the grave prepared for the deceased.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the angry youths, chanting war songs, disrupted the governor’s engagement with community leaders.

The situation intensified as security tried to control the situation, leading to a confrontation between the youths and the security operatives.

Despite the unrest, Governor Alia addressed community leaders, cautioning against actions that could incite chaos and disunity in the state.

He urged the community leaders to disassociate themselves from the turmoil, emphasizing the need for unity and peace.

The Governor, after addressing the leaders, also reassured students’ safety on campus during and after the burial, instructing the police to ensure peace during the wake-keep and interment scheduled for Thursday.

Efforts were underway to reconstruct the vandalized grave as preparations continued for the deceased proprietor’s burial.
