Tinubu’s Government Initiates Distribution of Cooking Gas to One Million Homes

In a bid to promote clean energy and enhance the livelihoods of rural women, the Bola Tinubu-led federal government has launched a program to distribute filled cooking gas cylinders across Nigeria. The initiative kicked off with the free distribution of gas cylinders to rural women in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, inaugurated the distribution exercise in Abuja on Tuesday, May 28. This initiative falls under the Decade of Gas outreach program, aiming to provide clean cooking solutions to households across the nation.

With a target of reaching 250,000 households annually over the next four years, the program aims to address the reliance on solid fuels such as firewood, kerosene, and charcoal, which contribute to deforestation, environmental degradation, and health hazards.

During the pilot phase of the program, over 1,000 women from various area councils in Abuja received gas cylinders, with plans to extend the distribution to other states in the near future.

The initiative is funded by the private sector, with sponsors from various players in the oil and gas sector. The distribution includes not only the free provision of gas cylinders but also training on the usage of cooking gas and the provision of associated equipment.

Speaking on the program’s objectives, Ed Ubong, the Coordinating Director of the Decade of Gas Programme, emphasized the importance of transitioning to cleaner energy sources and the positive impact it would have on the environment and public health.

Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting clean energy solutions and improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly women in rural areas. He emphasized the economic and health benefits of transitioning to clean cooking gas and highlighted the government’s goal of improving women’s inclusion and providing employment opportunities for youth.

The launch of this program marks a significant step towards achieving a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Nigeria, aligning with President Tinubu’s vision of prosperity through renewable energy initiatives.
