Edo Governor Allocates Deputy’s Office to Alaghodaro Summit Amid Speculations of Political Rift
In a recent development, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has designated the office of his Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, within Government House, Benin, as the headquarters for the annual Alaghodaro summit—an investment drive initiated by the state government to promote progress and development.
This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly in light of Obaseki’s previous statements about ongoing renovations to the one-story building.
A leaked memo, dated September 18, 2023, reveals Governor Obaseki’s directive to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, to promptly allocate the deputy governor’s office space to the trustees of the Alaghodaro summit.

According to the memo, the chosen office location, situated nearest to the summit’s venue—the New Festival Hall of Government House—had been occupied by Deputy Governor Shaibu until just a few days ago.
The move is anticipated to accommodate the board of trustees of the Alaghodaro summit, aiming to attract potential investors from various regions across Nigeria.
Following this decision, Comrade Philip Shaibu has been relocated from Government House and granted a new office at No. 7, Dennis Osadebey Avenue, GRA, Benin.

This development has sparked speculation about a potential strain in the relationship between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu. Reports suggest that their disagreement may stem from differences regarding the governor’s succession plans.
It is noteworthy that on September 5, 2023, Shaibu withdrew his anti-impeachment suit against Governor Obaseki. Nevertheless, he remains resolute in his ambition to succeed Obaseki as governor on November 12, 2024.
