FG Issues Flood Alert for 14 States and 31 Communities

List of States at risk of flood in Nigeria. 

The Federal Ministry of Environment issued a statement warning about potential heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in 14 states and 31 communities in Nigeria. The alert spans from July 4 to 8.

The identified states and communities at risk are as follows: Langtang and Shendam in Plateau state; Sumaila and Tudun Wada in Kano state; Shagari, Goronyo, and Silame in Sokoto state; and Okwe in Delta state.

Additional states and communities on the list include Kachia in Kaduna state; Upenekang in Akwa Ibom state; Mubi, Demsa, Song, Mayo-Belwa, Jimeta, and Yola in Adamawa state; and Katsina, Jibia, Kaita, and Bindawa in Katsina state.

Furthermore, the flood alert includes Wara, Yelwa, and Gwandu in Kebbi state; Shinkafi and Gummi in Zamfara state; Briyel in Borno state; Gwaram in Jigawa state; Jebba in Kwara state; and Mashegu and Kontagora in Niger state.

The government strongly advises relevant stakeholders in the concerned states to take necessary precautionary measures to prevent the loss of lives and property due to potential flooding.

The following locations and environs may witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding from 4th July – 8th July, 2023

  • Plateau State: Langtang, Shendam
  • Kano State: Sumaila, Tudun wada
  • Sokoto State: Shagari, Goronyo, Silame

Relevant stakeholders are advised to take precautionary measures to forestall loss of lives and property.
