Italy offered advice to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) concerning the military junta’s actions in the Republic of Niger after the deadline for reinstating ousted President Mohamed Bazoum had passed.
According to Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, he suggested extending the ultimatum during a media chat with La Stampa newspaper on Monday.
Additionally, he expressed his wish for the ECOWAS to address the problems through diplomatic means rather than resorting to military action.
Tajani reportedly stated, “The preferred approach is diplomatic. My hope is for the extension of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) ultimatum, which expired last night at midnight.”

As reported earlier Niger took the measure of closing its airspace until further notice due to concerns about potential military intervention from the West African regional bloc.
The threat arose when coup leaders refused to meet the deadline for reinstating the country’s ousted president, Mohammed Bazoum, who remains in detention.
Before that, a large gathering of junta supporters gathered at a stadium in the capital, Niamey, expressing their support for the decision not to yield to external pressure to step down by Sunday after the power seizure on July 26.
