Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against deploying the Nigerian military to intervene in the crisis in the Republic of Niger.

Tinubu had written a letter to the Nigerian Senate on Friday, requesting approval for military action and other sanctions against the military officers who took control in Niger.

On Saturday morning, via his Twitter handle, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, read the letter on the floor of the Upper Chamber.

However, Jibrin Samuel Okutepa expressed his concerns in a series of tweets, hoping that the National Assembly would not grant approval to Tinubu’s request for deploying the Nigerian military to Niger to engage in what he described as a ‘senseless war’ aimed at restoring a democratic government in that country.

“Nigerians are calling upon our security agencies, including the armed forces, to work towards restoring peace and security within the nation.”

Additionally, the Niger military junta severed diplomatic relations with Nigeria following the unsuccessful attempt by the ECOWAS envoy to mediate and broker peace.

Recently, Niger experienced a coup d’état as the military junta overthrew their democratically elected President, Mohamed Bazoum.

Tensions have been steadily escalating in the West African region.”
