Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Leader Urges President Tinubu for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo, has implored President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the deposed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Iwuanyanwu’s plea comes amidst growing calls for Kanu’s freedom, citing the need for peace and restoration of normalcy in the South-East region.
During an interview on Arise Television, Iwuanyanwu articulated the Igbo community’s acceptance of Tinubu as Nigeria’s constitutionally elected President. He emphasized that Tinubu’s intervention in Kanu’s release could aid in distinguishing criminals from law-abiding citizens in the region.

Expressing his stance, Iwuanyanwu stated, “I, as a leader of Igbos, after consultation with my people, we all agree that there was no reason why Nnamdi Kanu should be incarcerated, no reason why he should be detained.”
The Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo leader highlighted the impact of Kanu’s detainment, attributing ongoing criminal activities and economic downturn in the South-East to his prolonged detention.
He underscored the importance of releasing Kanu to restore peace and economic stability in the region, which has been adversely affected by the sit-at-home orders and criminal activities allegedly carried out under the guise of Kanu’s detainment.

“I have made the appeal to the President. I’ve even sought an appointment to meet the president with some leaders of the South-East, and the president has been very busy,” Iwuanyanwu explained.
He also emphasized the unanimous acceptance of Tinubu as the President by the Igbo populace, expressing hope that Tinubu would address the concerns faced by the region.
The Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo leader reiterated the commitment of the Igbo community to support Tinubu while urging him to consider resolving the prevailing issues affecting the South-East.

Despite the recent Supreme Court ruling on Kanu’s terrorism trial, Iwuanyanwu stressed that their appeal was directed to President Tinubu, highlighting Kanu’s disavowal of criminal activities in the South-East.
He concluded, “I still believe that our president will yield to our request and release him so that now we can differentiate between those who were actually fighting for him and those who were just criminals.”
