Rivers State House of Assembly to Screen Caretaker Committee Nominees for 23 LGAs

The Rt. Hon. Victor Oko Jumbo-led Rivers State House of Assembly has issued invitations for the screening of Caretaker Committee (CTC) Chairmen and members for the state’s 23 local government areas (LGAs) today.

This development follows the expiration of the tenure of the elected chairmen and councillors across these LGAs. The Jumbo-led faction of the House maintains loyalty to Governor Sim Fubara, who, on Tuesday, directed the Heads of Local Government Administration to assume leadership of their respective councils pending further directives. This directive has stirred a crisis, with the outgoing chairmen refusing to vacate their offices.

In response, a memo signed by the Clerk of the House, G.M. Gills-West, was released early Wednesday morning. It invites 23 nominees to appear before the House for screening as CTC chairmen. Additionally, seven individuals from each LGA have been summoned for screening as caretaker committee members.

The memo, referencing Section 9(5) of the Rivers State Local Government Law No. 5 of 2018, states:

“The Rivers State House of Assembly hereby invites the following nominees for screening and confirmation as Chairmen and members of Caretaker Committees of the Twenty-Three (23) Local Government Areas of Rivers State, pursuant to Section 9(5) of the Rivers State Local Government Law, No.5 of 2018.
