Two Nigerian Soldiers Arrested for Stealing Armoured Cables at Dangote Refinery in Lagos

 

Two personnel of the Nigerian Army have been apprehended for allegedly vandalizing and stealing armoured cables at the Dangote Refinery in Lagos. The suspects, identified as CPL Innocent Joseph and L/CPL Jacob Gani, were caught in the act last Sunday, according to a military signal obtained by SaharaReporters.

The Dangote Refinery, owned by the Dangote Group, is a significant infrastructure project inaugurated on May 22, 2023, situated in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State.

 

Upon full operation, it is slated to become the largest single-train refinery globally, with a capacity to process approximately 650,000 barrels per day of crude oil, representing an investment worth over $19 billion.

The soldiers were intercepted as they attempted to exit the Dangote Refinery premises with 897 armoured cables that had been cut to size. The military signal stated, “During the routine search, they were caught with eight hundred and ninety-seven cut-to-size armour cables.”

 

Further investigation revealed that the stolen cables were acquired within the refinery premises with the assistance of an individual named Smart, who is currently at large.

The suspects were driving a white Acura jeep with registration number LAGOS JJJ 594 HS at the time of their arrest. Both the vehicle and the stolen armoured cables are now in custody as part of the ongoing investigation.

 

The incident has raised concerns about security lapses within critical infrastructure sites and highlights the need for robust measures to prevent theft and vandalism. The Nigerian Army has taken custody of the soldiers, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
