Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dumebi Kachikwu, criticized the initial approach taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s administration, stating that it did not commence on a positive note.

During an ARISE TV interview, Kachikwu shared his perspective on the government’s plan to distribute N8,000 as palliatives to impoverished Nigerians in order to alleviate the impact of subsidy removal.

He likened the president’s decision to remove subsidies to taking two steps forward and ten steps backward. According to him, “I don’t understand how a president who has long desired this position can exhibit a lack of urgency in addressing crucial issues.”

“In the first two weeks, I personally anticipated the president to unveil his cabinet nominees for public scrutiny. I expected to witness and hear comprehensive policy statements regarding urgent matters.”

“The removal of petroleum subsidies was implemented, a topic that the president campaigned on. While I, too, advocated for it, I believe that Nigeria as a whole should not suffer for the failures of a few individuals or the government’s inability to effectively manage subsidies.”

“What we should have done was temporarily suspend subsidies while simultaneously implementing stronger and more refined processes to prevent abuse.”

“Let us also consider the upcoming cash transfer program. We witnessed the previous government’s attempt at this, and we observed how it failed and was misused. I anticipated a much-improved strategy from the current administration.”

“Some argue that cash transfers can have a multiplier effect on the economy. However, in Nigeria’s case, eight thousand naira will make no substantial difference. I fail to comprehend how the president could endorse such an approach.”

“A president’s effectiveness heavily relies on his advisers. While I am unfamiliar with the president’s advisers, I firmly believe they have made erroneous judgments. Tinubu’s administration seems to be moving backward after taking a few steps forward.”
