Nollywood actress Toyin Abraham has announced her decision to keep her political affiliations private in the future, citing lessons learned from recent social media interactions. This decision follows a public exchange on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday, where Abraham addressed questions about her support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 general election campaign.

The exchange began when an X user, Otunba (@ManLikeIcey), queried Abraham about the promises made to her by Tinubu. Otunba wrote, “Maybe one day Toyin Abraham will divulge the plans Bola Tinubu shared with her to the public. I strongly believe we deserve to hear. Thank u @toyin_abraham1.”

In her response, Abraham disclosed that she had been assured of “good governance and happiness for everyone” by Tinubu’s camp. “You asked me in a polite way so I will definitely answer you, of course, I was told and promised good governance and happiness for everyone and which I believe,” she stated.

However, she also voiced her concerns about being held accountable for the government’s performance. “If things didn’t go well, why do I have to be the one to suffer for it because I remember I voted [for] (ex-president) Jonathan and I was bullied but I didn’t put blame on anyone after everyone chose (ex-president) Buhari. So please, why would they be cursing and trolling me every time,” Abraham implored.

When Otunba pressed further, asking if she believed Tinubu had failed in governance, Abraham replied, “I have faced my life and career cos I am not a politician and I’m not in government, I have learnt my lesson never ever to be open with my choice again.”

This marks a significant shift for Abraham, who in 2023 openly supported Tinubu, then a presidential candidate for the All Progressives Congress, alongside Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Sharing pictures of her meeting with Tinubu, she expressed renewed hope and confidence in his leadership.

“For the first time, I met the incoming president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and he shared some of his ideas, visions, and strategies to solve the challenges before us as a nation. Listening to him renewed my hope and reaffirmed why he is my choice,” she wrote at the time.

Abraham’s recent comments highlight the personal and professional risks faced by public figures who openly declare their political stances. As she steps back from political endorsements, Ejes Gist News reports that her experience will serve as a cautionary tale about the complexities of political engagement in the public eye.
