Ogbonnaya Ugwu, also known as Spaco, was assassinated by unidentified assailants. He represented Echara Ward 2 in Okposi Community, Ohaozara Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.

Ejes Gist News Nigeria gathered that Mr. Ugwu was killed around 10 p.m. on Saturday as he returned from his shop.

According to sources in Okposi, Mr. Ugwu was attacked by gunmen near the Okposi Court Area junction.

“The councilman was attacked as he returned to his shop, Angle 90, a popular drinking establishment in Okposi.

They shot him, he fell into a gutter, and they set him on fire before fleeing the scene.

“As I speak to you, Mgbo N’echara youths in Okposi are protesting the incident,” said one of the sources.

A video trending on social media shows the burned remains of the murdered council member being removed from the crime scene.

Onome Onovwakpoyeya, a police spokesperson in Ebonyi State, confirmed the homicide.

She stated that the police were conducting an investigation into the incident.

It is currently unknown if the murder has any political significance.

In recent months, the security situation in Ebonyi State has deteriorated, with the state recording a number of politically motivated attacks and murders.

Igboke Ewa, a monarch, was murdered by gunmen suspected of being political thugs last month.

Additionally, an All Progressives Congress supporter was killed on a campaign site in the Ishielu Local Government Area of the state.

Bernard Odoh, the governorship candidate for the All Progressive Grand Alliance in Ebonyi State, and his convoy were attacked in the Izzi Local Government Area of the state in 2012.

Although no lives were lost, one of the vehicles in his convoy was damaged by gunfire from the attackers.

Mr. Odoh escaped death in an attack in early February in which two police officers assigned to him were killed.

On Friday, gunmen attacked the PDP governorship candidate’s campaign venue in Izzi Local Government Area, destroying cars and other property.
