On Tuesday, gunmen reportedly shot into the air to disperse traders at a market in the Ishieke and Ukwuachi neighbourhoods of Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State.
Gunmen reported to be enforcing a separatist group’s seven-day sit-in stormed the market and fired into the air to disperse traders.

The shooters rode in an open-roof truck and two motorcycles, each armed with a variety of high-caliber weapons.

They were claimed to have warned the traders to return home right away for their own safety.

The incident produced chaos in the region as many fled for safety.

According to a local source, police rushed the location after the gunmen fled.

However, as word of the occurrence spread, shops and businesses in several regions of the state, particularly in the Mile 50 area, were forced to close temporarily.

The incident occurred when gunmen burned a patrol van in the Ohaukwu local government district on Monday.

Odono Ikechukwu Onwe, Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government, denounced the violence at Ugwagba.

During a security meeting at the Council Headquarters, he announced this.

The Chairman stated that he will use all possible efforts to capture the offenders.

Onome Onovwakpoyeya, a police spokeswoman, stated that police operatives have been dispatched to the affected regions to ensure order.
