Once again, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra has distanced itself from the violent enforcement of the sit-at-home exercise in the South-East region. The separatist group emphasized that if the Federal Government genuinely aimed to address insecurity in the South-East, it should unconditionally release their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, in compliance with the court’s decision.

In a statement issued on Friday by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the organization condemned the Nigerian Army’s statement associating it with the continuous imposition and enforcement of sit-at-home orders in the region.

Emma powerful stated, “The Chief of Army, Taoreed Lagbaja, cannot feign ignorance of the numerous previous press releases issued by IPOB, under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, explicitly disassociating ourselves from Simon Ekpa and his criminal group responsible for enforcing the sit-at-home order.”

“To clarify any doubts, it must be stated that IPOB bears no responsibility for the Mondays’ sit-at-home orders, failed seven-day directives, or the alleged two-week enforcement. The irresponsible and abusive sit-at-home approach is attributed to the autonomous faction led by Simon Ekpa.

We have consistently emphasized that Simon Ekpa and his autonomous group are not members of IPOB and do not represent Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in their violent enforcement of sit-at-home orders.

“If the Federal Government and its security agencies genuinely seek peace in the South-East, they should unconditionally release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as directed by the Appeal Court of Nigeria in Abuja.

This would lead to the disappearance and dissolution of their sponsored criminal elements who exploit Kanu’s detention to engage in unlawful activities.”

The group cautioned the Chief of Army against instilling fear in the people of the South-East under the pretext of targeting sit-at-home enforcers. Furthermore, they urged the government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu not to repeat the mistakes of previous administrations.
