Naira Hits Historic Low: Dollar Exchange Rate Plunges to N803/$1, Lowest Level Since Adoption of Managed Float System

On Friday, July 15, 2023, the exchange rate between the dollar and the naira reached a historic low of N803/$1 at the investor and exporter window. This marks a significant milestone as it is the lowest point the exchange rate has ever fallen to since Nigeria adopted the managed float exchange rate system. It also signifies the first time the rate has closed above N800/$1.

The closing rate of N803/$1 represents a notable 7.3% decline from the beginning of the week when it stood at N744/$1. The initial sign of a challenge emerged when the exchange rate closed at N776/$1.

According to data from the FMDQ, where the exchange rate trades unofficially, there was a depreciation of 7.72% from the previous closing rate of N746.28 on Thursday, July 13, 2023.

Forex turnover at the investor and exporter window experienced a drastic drop, plunging to only $46.9 million. This reflects a substantial decline of 46.33% compared to the previous day and marks the lowest point in forex turnover since May 2nd, 2023.

Interestingly, the market witnessed a record intra-day high of N829/$1, surpassing even the parallel market rate. However, the intra-day low remained at N689/$1.

Additionally, this intra-day high is the lowest level observed since the launch of the revised investor and exporter window.
