Godswill Obot Akpabio, the Senate President of Nigeria, stated that the Federal Government intends to raise workers’ salaries as a measure to soften the impact of removing fuel subsidies.

During a meeting with Abiodun Oyebanji, the Governor of Ekiti State, and State parliament members at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Akpabio reassured Nigerians that the government is fully cognizant of the challenges arising from the elimination of fuel subsidies.

He mentioned that the removal of fuel subsidy was a strategic move by the current administration to combat corruption, as the previous fuel subsidy system was heavily tainted with corrupt practices.

He asserted that if the fuel subsidy had not been removed, Nigeria would have faced significant challenges in the coming years.

Removing the subsidy would enable the government to have enough financial capacity to meet its obligations, including paying salaries and wages, particularly if they are adjusted upwards.
