Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Rejects Petrol Price Hike by NNPC.
The recent increase in the pump price of petrol by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has been met with strong opposition from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
Ejes Gist News reports that the national oil company raised the prices of Petrol, also known as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), from 537 to 617 naira per litre.

In response to this development, Comrade Benson Upah, the spokesperson for the NLC, expressed the organization’s discontent in a conversation with Leadership. Upah emphasized that the hike in petrol prices is unacceptable to the Nigerian people.
Upah further highlighted that this increase poses a significant threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizens, as it directly impacts their businesses, incomes, and livelihoods. He questioned the government’s rationale behind this decision and failed to see how it benefits the people or the economy, or how it instills hope among the populace.

Consequently, Upah called upon the federal government to reconsider its course of action, urging them to veer away from the path that could potentially drive the fuel price to N1,000 per litre.
In his statement, Upah asserted, “This increment is unacceptable to us at the Congress because it poses a significant threat to the socio-economic well-being of the citizenry, their businesses, incomes, livelihoods—everything!

We had previously emphasized that no reasonable government, acting reasonably, abandons its national currency entirely to the whims of the market, as this could result in unintended consequences.”
He further warned that the new pump price indicates the possibility of it rising to N1,000 or even higher in the near future. This unpredictability makes planning difficult and life uncertain for the citizens.
“We advise the government to reconsider its decision and change its course of action. The people are not happy, and their patience should not be taken for granted,” Upah added.
