Remanded in Prison Over Diversion of Palliatives.

 

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress () in Yobe State, Comrade Muktar Tarbutu, has been remanded in prison on allegations of diverting palliatives intended for union members.

 

Comrade Tarbutu was brought before Magistrate II Damaturu on Wednesday to face charges related to the purported diversion of relief materials provided by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

According to Barrister Mohammad Mohammad Ngumurumi, Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Yobe, the NEDC had entrusted the NLC with distributing the palliatives among selected unions, a responsibility which Tarbutu allegedly neglected.

 

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) distributed 150 bags of rice, 150 bags of sugar, 150 cartons of spaghetti, 150 wrappers for women, 150 textiles for men, and 150 blankets,” stated Ngumurumi.

He was tasked with sharing these items among members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). However, he failed to distribute them to NUJ and NBA members,” Ngumurumi continued.

“Upon inquiry, he failed to provide evidence of distribution, prompting the NBA to escalate the matter to the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB),” Ngumurumi explained.

Comrade Tarbutu pleaded not guilty to the charges during the arraignment. However, Chief Magistrate II Damaturu, His Worship Hasiya Abubakar, ordered his remand in prison until April 18, 2024, for further proceedings.
