Protest Over High Cost of Living: Arrest 25, Including Women Leader .

 

In response to a mass protest against the high cost of living, the Niger State Police Command has arrested 25 individuals, including Aisha Jibrin, a 30-year-old woman who led the demonstration in Minna, the state capital.

Aisha Jibrin, alongside 57-year-old Fatima Aliyu and 43-year-old Fatima Isyaku, spearheaded the protest on Monday, where women and youths took to the streets to decry the economic challenges and soaring living costs in the region.

The demonstration unfolded as a group of women, led by Aisha, blocked Minna-Bida Road at the popular Kpakungu Roundabout, expressing their grievances against what they perceive as hardships under the Bola Tinubu government.

Despite police intervention, the protesters continued, asserting that the police were acting as agents of the government.

The police claimed to have used minimum force, but the situation escalated as protesters allegedly attacked law enforcement with various weapons, damaging police vehicles and parts of the Kpakungu Division roof.

Announcing the arrests, the Niger State Police Command asserted that the protesters turned violent after the police employed minimum force to disperse them. The State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Wasiu, disclosed that the weapons seized included a bench, a stick used as a barricade, three knives, one scissors, one cutlass, one saw blade, one iron pipe, four other sticks, two wraps of Indian hemp, and charms.

During interrogation, Aisha Jibrin claimed she was unaware that her actions were illegal, asserting that she informed a local youth leader, Hassan, who allegedly failed to communicate their protest plans to the police.

The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, Shawulu Danmamman, urged the public to be law-abiding and refrain from resorting to self-help, emphasizing the importance of approaching appropriate authorities to address concerns.

All suspects have been taken to SCID Minna for investigation, with plans for prosecution. Efforts are underway to apprehend other identified participants in the protest.
