Speaking to reporters in Abuja yesterday, Osifo referred to the committee led by Bukar Goni Aji, inaugurated in January by Vice President Kassim Shettima to discuss a basic minimum wage.

Expectations had been high among Nigerians for the unveiling of the new wage on May 1, following ’s promise of a revised wage structure after the removal of fuel subsidies.

However, Osifo explained that the TUC had not yet aligned its proposed minimum wage of N447,000 with that of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), which now stands at N615,000.

“Therefore, May 1 will not be suitable for announcing the unless the Federal Government intends to pay workers a minimum wage of N500,000,” he remarked.

He emphasized that the demanded N615,000 was negotiable, acknowledging that both the government and labor union would engage in discussions to reach a consensus.

Osifo highlighted that the computation of N615,000 was based on economic conditions when the exchange rate was lower, and expressed optimism for further committee meetings post-May 1.

President Tinubu initially hinted at the new minimum wage in a nationwide address last June, promising its inclusion in the budget once agreed upon by the NLC and TUC.

The committee, chaired by Aji and comprising various government officials and labor representatives, was established to facilitate these discussions, reaffirming Tinubu’s commitment to uplifting the workforce.

Shettima, during the committee’s inauguration, acknowledged the challenges facing the economy but assured Nigerians of better prospects ahead, emphasizing the government’s awareness of short-term implications while striving for long-term benefits.
