Today, the Supreme Court is a fortress as security personnel lock down major routes, anticipating the pivotal decisions on the fate of eight governors. The governors facing electoral challenges include Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Abba Yusuf (Kano), Alex Otti (Abia), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Bassey Otu (Cross River), and Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau).

Amid marathon judgments, governors from Bauchi, Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara brace themselves for decisions delivered by five-member panels of the apex court. Security measures extend beyond the court’s premises, blocking supporters while only permitting entry for lawyers and accredited journalists after thorough screening.

The cases, brought by candidates of the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), involve Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Abdulazeez Adediran (Jandor), respectively. The LP seeks to nullify Sanwo-Olu’s victory, arguing his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, holds dual citizenship, rendering Sanwo-Olu’s candidacy invalid.

Governors Yusuf and Muftwang aim to overturn the Appeal Court’s judgments that ousted them from office. Meanwhile, governors of Zamfara, Cross River, Bauchi, and Abia hope the apex court will affirm their election victories, dismissing petitions challenging their legitimacy.
