Popular Police Inspector has been killed in Rivers. 

In a distressing incident that unfolded on February 21, 2024, gunmen wreaking havoc in Nigeria’s oil-rich southern state of Rivers claimed the life of a dedicated police inspector.

The assailants targeted a police checkpoint in the Obio/Akpo Local Government Area, where the inspector and fellow officers were diligently carrying out stop-and-search duties.

The ambush occurred at approximately 9 pm on Wednesday at the Eliozu Flyover, according to a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko.

The gunmen, arriving in a fully tinted carton-colored Sienna bus from the Rumuodumaya axis, brazenly opened fire on the unsuspecting police team.

Tragically, the inspector fell victim to this senseless violence, succumbing to the injuries inflicted during the ambush. In response to the attack, other vigilant policemen at the checkpoint swiftly engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle, resulting in the successful neutralization of one of the attackers.

The statement from Iringe-Koko underscored the valiant efforts of the police team in the face of adversity.

“We are deeply saddened to announce a heinous incident that occurred on February 21, 2024, involving an attack on policemen attached to Operation Sting of the Rivers State Police Command,” the statement reads.

Despite the tragic loss, the police team exhibited unwavering bravery, managing to neutralize one assailant with a mask on his face, while the others evaded capture, possibly sustaining gunshot wounds in the process.

The Command has launched a thorough investigation into this vile act and has already identified the group responsible. Iringe-Koko assured the public, stating, “Rest assured, we will relentlessly pursue these criminals and bring them to justice.”

This incident adds to the concerning trend of security challenges in Nigeria, emphasizing the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in their tireless efforts to maintain order and safety.
