Bars Ex-Governors, Deputies from Receiving Pensions.

 

The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a bill to repeal the law that allowed the payment of pensions and gratuities to former governors and their deputies. Sponsored by Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu, the Majority Leader, the bill awaits Governor Alex Otti’s assent.

Once signed into law, it will be known as the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024”. Speaker Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa highlighted that the move aims to reduce the state’s governance costs and redirect resources towards development.

The Assembly also entertained bills such as H.A.B 10, seeking to establish the Abia State Cocoa Development and Marketing Board, and H.A.B 9, aiming to establish Colleges of Nursing Sciences owned by faith-based and private establishments. These bills mark strides in legislative efforts to enhance governance and resource allocation in Abia State.

Responding to the Assembly’s decision, the Chief Press Secretary to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu clarified that the former governor has not received any pension since leaving office in May 2023.

 

Emphasizing Ikpeazu’s disinterest in pension payments, the statement urged the state government to focus on governance rather than media sensationalism.
