Abuja-based human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, to step away from politics and become a mentor for emerging politicians. In his New Year message, Adeyanju asserted that Atiku’s persistence in contesting for the presidency in 2023 paved the way for Bola Tinubu to become the President of Nigeria.
Adeyanju acknowledged Atiku’s significant contributions to Nigerian democracy but emphasized the need for him to bow out gracefully, urging him to leave a legacy of uniting the opposition and supporting younger politicians.

According to Adeyanju, Atiku’s refusal to cooperate with Labour Party’s Peter Obi, New Nigeria People’s Party’s Rabiu Kwankwaso, and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ultimately contributed to Tinubu’s victory.
Highlighting the missed opportunity in the 2023 elections, Adeyanju pointed out that Atiku’s failure to foster unity among key opposition figures and his inability to manage opposition elements led to President Tinubu’s narrow victory.
The activist emphasized that Atiku should have worked collaboratively with Peter Obi, Kwankwaso, and others under one platform, which could have resulted in a different presidential outcome.
Adeyanju argued that Atiku’s divisive actions, picking unnecessary fights within the opposition, and failure to support key figures ultimately weakened the opposition’s chances. He urged Atiku to reconsider his intention to run in the 2027 presidential elections, stressing that he is not the sole politician in Nigeria and that it’s time for the younger generation to take the lead.
Calling on Atiku to adopt the role of a unifying figure, Adeyanju likened him to Moses and encouraged him to prioritize the greater good of a united opposition.

The activist stressed that history would judge Atiku based on his actions and urged the opposition to find common ground, presenting a united front in 2027 through a younger and vibrant candidate.
