Arewa Group Calls on Deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, to Relinquish the Palace to Ensure Peace”
The Arewa Social Contract Initiative has called for the dethroned Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, to leave the ancient city immediately to maintain peace.
The plea was made on Sunday, May 26, following Bayero’s return to Kano, where he has taken residence in the Gidan Nasarawa palace, escalating tensions as Sanusi occupies the main palace.

Alh. Sani Mahmoud Darma, the national chairman of the Arewa Social Contract Initiative, addressed the press in Kano, highlighting that the collective decision of Arewa executives from 19 northern states identified Bayero as the root of the ongoing conflict.
Darma emphasized that Bayero’s acceptance of his dethronement and departure from Kano should have been final.

“It is very unfortunate that after his dethronement, Aminu Ado Bayero accepted the decision and packed all his belongings from the palace and left Kano state, then some people from the top brought him back and claimed his lost position,” Darma stated. He stressed that Bayero’s return could incite violence, urging him to pursue any grievances through legal channels outside Kano.

Drawing on historical precedents, Darma noted, “This is unacceptable! It happened to Sanusi and he benefited. When Sanusi was dethroned and he (Bayero) was appointed he accepted everything in good faith and left Kano for Bayero to occupy the palace. Why is he back now that he is the victim? It shows he is still interested in the throne.”
The Arewa leader reiterated the group’s unwavering support for the reinstated Emir Sanusi, crediting Governor Abba Yusuf’s campaign promise and the Kano people’s satisfaction with his decision. Darma pointed out that Sanusi’s reinstatement was a long-awaited move welcomed by the populace.
“This is purely the decision of the State House of Assembly, the governor, the kingmakers, and the people of the state, after the old law was repealed. So, it is purely a state affair,” Darma concluded, expressing surprise at the court’s involvement.
