Court Voids Buhari’s sack of Ararume as NNPCL Chairman, declares it unconstitutional
On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja reinstated Senator Ifeanyi Godwin Ararume to his position as non-executive Chairman of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited NNPCL.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s dismissal of Ararume on January 17, 2023, was declared null and void by the court on the grounds that the action was arbitrary, unlawful, and illegal.

In a judgement in a suit brought by Ararume, Justice Inyang Edem Ekwo ordered Buhari and the NNPCL to pay N5 billion to Ararume as compensation for the unlawful termination and disruption of his appointment.
Justice Ekwo ordered Ararume’s immediate reinstatement as the NNPCL’s non-Executive Chairman.
In addition, the judge declared null and void all decisions made by the Board of Directors of the NNPCL in Ararume’s absence.

Justice Ekwo ruled that Buhari acted beyond his authority, improperly, unlawfully, and in violation of the law when he fired Ararume for using his name to register NNPCL, and that such a flagrant act cannot stand in the face of the law.
Ararume had dragged Buhari before the court, requesting that it declare his removal as NNPC chief illegal, unconstitutional, and in violation of the CAMA law under which NNPCL was established.
In addition to requesting that the court return him to office, Ararume demanded N100 billion in compensation for the damages he suffered nationally and internationally as a result of the unlawful manner in which President Buhari removed him from office.
