In a dramatic turn of events, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has ordered the arrest of the dethroned Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero. This directive was issued shortly after Bayero returned to the ancient city on Saturday morning, where he was greeted by a large crowd of supporters at the airport.

Governor Yusuf’s order was articulated in a statement released by Sanusi Tofa, the Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, Kano. The statement indicated that Bayero’s presence was causing tension in the state, warranting his immediate arrest.

This development follows the recent repeal of the Kano Emirates Council Law by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) controlled House of Assembly. The law, originally assented to by ex-Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in December 2019, had split the emirates into five and appointed Emirs over each. Governor Yusuf, upon signing the repeal, gave the affected Emirs 48 hours to vacate their palaces and hand over to the Commissioner of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

In a swift move, Yusuf reinstated Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi, who had been deposed by Ganduje in 2020. Sanusi received his reappointment letter on Friday and led the Jumat prayers at the Government House, Kano.

The tension escalated early Saturday when Bayero returned to Kano. His aircraft landed at Aminu Kano International Airport at 4:30 AM, where he was met by supporters chanting verses from the Holy Quran and expressing their defiance. Bayero, dressed in full royal regalia, remained silent as he proceeded to observe the dawn prayer at the airport.
