In a personally signed statement posted on his Twitter page on Monday, the former Governor of Anambra State disclosed that he would be turning 62 on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. Despite pressure from his supporters, including members of the obedient family and the Labour Party, who urged him to mark the occasion, Obi firmly rejected the idea.

Instead of indulging in festivities, Obi urged those who wished to celebrate or present him with gifts to direct their generosity towards those in need. He encouraged them to visit hospitals, orphanages, homes for the people who have a disability and elderly, and extend their benevolence to those institutions.

In his statement, Obi wrote, “On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, I will be celebrating my 62nd Birthday. While I remain deeply grateful to God for His boundless mercies, I remain committed to my decision of over 20 years, refraining from celebrating my birthdays in today’s Nigeria, given the deplorable state of the nation.”

He further added, “Nevertheless, some friends, members of the Labour Party, OBIdient Family, and supporters have inquired about joining me in commemorating this day and presenting gifts. I humbly and respectfully urge all those who desire to celebrate with me to look around and extend their gifts to people in need, especially during these challenging times.”

Obi’s appeal resonated strongly with the need to address the plight of vulnerable individuals in society. He suggested focusing on hospitals, orphanages, homes for the elderly and people who have a disability, as well as supporting schools in remote areas with essential resources.
