This is Jere’s second extension, following a one-year extension of his retirement granted previously.
Tony Akuneme, the spokesman for the NIS, confirmed over the phone to journalists that the CG received another letter extending his term until the end of the current administration.
“The CG has another letter that supersedes the previous one [letter instructing him to vacate office. He has been granted an extension until the end of the president’s term in office. It’s just a one-month extension,” Akuneme said.

In an earlier letter from the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, dated April 17, 2023, and addressed to the NIS director, the government instructed him to hand over to the most senior officer, the Deputy Comptroller-General, on or before April 24, pending President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of a permanent CG.
Obasi Edozie Edmund, acting secretary of the Board, signed the letter.
Some officers of the Service had threatened to stage a protest if the government extended Jere’s tenure again, and on Friday, a Civil Society Organisation staged a protest at the NIS headquarters and the Ministry of Interior in Abuja to reject the Immigration CG’s continued tenure.
Olufemu Lawson, the executive director of the CSO, Centre for Public Accountability, alleged that Jere was staying in office without authorization.
