High Court Freezes Oyo Government’s Bank Accounts Over Ex-Council Chiefs’ Lawsuit

A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has issued an order to freeze ten bank accounts belonging to the Government.

The decision was reached by Justice A. O. Ebong following a case initiated by former council chiefs in Oyo state who were dismissed from their positions on May 29, 2019, by .

These former officials secured a judgment amounting to N4,874,889,425.60 against Governor Makinde and other state officials/agencies in 2021.

The affected banks where the accounts are frozen include Zenith Bank, United Bank of Africa (UBA), Wema Bank, First Bank of Nigeria, Ecobank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Access Bank, Polaris Bank, Jaiz Bank, and Union Bank.

Justice Ebong, in addition to freezing the accounts, also awarded a cost of N300,000.00 against the judgment debtors.

The judge ordered that a copy of the freeze order be served on Governor Seyi Makinde and other relevant parties involved. The case has been adjourned until January 5 next year for further hearings.

The ruling follows a legal battle stemming from the dismissal of the ex-council chiefs by Governor Makinde in 2019. With the subsequent court judgment in 2021, the former officials secured a significant sum against the governor and other state agencies.

This recent order to freeze the state government’s bank accounts is a result of this protracted legal dispute.
