Delta’s oldest monarch, Richard Ogbon, dies at 106

 

His Majesty Richard Ogbon, Ogoni-Oghoro 1, the oldest monarch in Delta State, Ohworode of Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area, has joined his ancestors at the age of 106.

 

The translated Ohworode, who was installed as the 12th Ohworode in 1988 at the age of 70, was a Royal Canon and Chairman of the Urhobo nation’s Council of Traditional Rulers.

Olorogun Macaulay Ovbagbedia, the Otota of Olomu Kingdom, announced the passing of the renowned monarch on Friday during an expanded meeting of the community’s high chiefs and thought leaders held within the Ohworode palace.

He stated, “, we can confirm that our Ohworode has returned to God.” His life was remarkable; he served the government and his people admirably.

 

“We are both mourning and rejoicing. The reason is that he was old, but it still hurts”.

Also speaking, the Akpile of Olomu Kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), stated that “due to the occurrence, there will be 21 days of mourning in the kingdom during which no funerals or weddings will be held.”

He also requested that the chiefs refrain from wearing the traditional red cap and beads and instead wear black armbands while the burial arrangements are being finalised and announced.

 

The announcement of the king’s passage was heralded by the blasting of royal cannons 21 times. Earlier, the Ema traditional cultural troupe performed a cultural display, which was followed by the firing of royal cannons 21 times.

Born on January 20, 1917, the deceased Ohworode of Olomu kingdom celebrated his last birthday as “longevity king” with a thanksgiving on January 20, 2023, two months after he succumbed to health complications.

It will be recalled that prior to his death, the deceased monarch could drive himself, read without glasses, and had a full set of teeth. He was also the oldest man in the Ogoni Olomu Community (Okpako Orere).

 

His reign was marked by tremendous peace, development, and progress.

In 1936, the late monarch was baptised into the Anglican Communion. He was a former Inspector of Education for the education ministry of the Bendel State.
