Asue Ighodalo, the Chairman of Nigerian Breweries Plc, has officially resigned from his position, effective December 31, 2023. This development coincides with Mr.

Ighodalo’s upcoming gubernatorial campaign in Edo State, running under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and allegedly being the favored candidate of Governor Godwin Obaseki.

The resignation was disclosed through a corporate filing with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX), where the company acknowledged and detailed the departure.

Uaboi Agbebaku, the Secretary of Nigerian Breweries, explained that Mr. Ighodalo’s decision to enter public service prompted his exit from the board.

To facilitate a smooth transition, Sijbe Hiemstra, the longest-serving director, will serve as the interim Chairman from January 1, 2024.

The company assured stakeholders that the board would utilize this interim period to appoint a permanent successor.

Mr. Agbebaku conveyed Mr. Ighodalo’s commitment to public service, stating, “Mr. Asue Ighodalo informed the board of his decision to offer himself for public service.

Therefore, he will resign from the board and as Chairman on December 31, 2023, to dedicate his full attention to this new endeavor.”

Notably, Mr. Hiemstra has been associated with Nigerian Breweries since August 2011, having previously served on the governance and statutory audit committees.

Meanwhile, the company also disclosed the resignation of Ndidi Nwuneli from her role as an independent non-executive director. The unfolding changes within the Nigerian Breweries leadership underscore the dynamic intersection of corporate and political landscapes in Edo State.
