Nigerian Governor Slashes Registration Fees by 50% for Indigenes in State Tertiary Institutions
In a bid to alleviate the financial strain on its citizens, the Kano State Government has announced a significant reduction of 50% in registration fees for indigenes studying at state-owned tertiary institutions for the upcoming 2023/2024 academic session.
The move comes as a response to the economic challenges stemming from the removal of fuel subsidies, which has led to increased financial difficulties for many individuals.

Dr. Yusuf Kofar-Mata, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, revealed this decision while addressing the press in the state. He emphasized that the government’s resolution to lessen the financial burden on the people is rooted in the aim to counteract the adverse effects of the recent fuel subsidy removal and the resulting economic hardships.
The reduced registration fees will be applicable to Kano indigenes enrolled in regular courses across various state-owned institutions. Notably, this decision emerged following a meeting involving the head of tertiary institutions, the state’s governor, and the visitor.

Dr. Kofar-Mata conveyed the governor’s approval for this significant reduction, stating, “The Governor has issued the approval for the reduction of 50% of the registration fees for all Kano State indigenes studying regular courses for the 2023/2024 academic session at state-owned institutions.”
He further explained that this initiative was designed to mitigate the impact of the current economic challenges, particularly for students and their families. The removal of fuel subsidies and the subsequent economic difficulties have led to elevated prices of essential commodities, making life strenuous for the masses.
The commissioner emphasized that this decision will benefit Kano State indigenes studying at various institutions, including Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Yusuf Maitama Sule University in Kano, Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kumbotso, Aminu Kano College of Legal and Islamic Studies, Kano State Polytechnic, Audu Bako College of Agriculture in Danbatta, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Advance and Remedial Studies in Tudun Wada, and Kano State College of Education.
The reduction in registration fees marks a proactive step by the Kano State Government to ease the financial burden on its citizens during a period of economic challenges, demonstrating a commitment to prioritize education and the well-being of its students.
