Nigerian Senate Vows Action Against Electricity Tariff Hike.

The Nigerian Senate has responded to the recent surge in electricity tariffs sanctioned by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), offering reassurance to citizens concerned about the substantial increase.

Addressing journalists on Thursday in Abuja, Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu affirmed that the red chamber is committed to safeguarding the interests of Nigerians amidst the tariff adjustments.

Adaramodu emphasized that upon the Senate’s return from recess, deliberations would be conducted to address the over 300% rise in electricity tariffs affecting customers categorized under the ‘Band A’ classification.

“The relevant Senate committees on power are studying the situation,” he stated. “You know we are on recess now. When we resume, they will present their findings to the Senate at the plenary. We won’t abandon Nigerians.”

The spokesperson’s remarks come in the wake of the federal government’s approval, facilitated by NERC, of a significant tariff increase for customers falling within the ‘Band A’ classification, who benefit from extended electricity supply durations.

NERC’s Vice Chairman, Musliu Oseni, disclosed on Wednesday that customers in the ‘Band A’ category would experience a notable surge in their electricity bills, with tariffs rising from the current N66 per kilowatt-hour to N225, representing a 240.91% increase.
