This decision was reached following an extraordinary meeting of the national executive council (NEC) held in Abuja on Tuesday, as reported by Channels TV. The unions have promptly initiated nationwide mobilization efforts, rallying members and allies to partake in this industrial action.

The announcement of the strike comes in the wake of a recent incident involving Joe Ajaero, the president of the NLC, who was reportedly apprehended by heavily armed police officers at the Imo council secretariat in Owerri.

The NLC stated that Ajaero was subjected to physical assault and was blindfolded immediately following his arrest, with the added concern that his phones and personal belongings confiscated by security operatives have not been returned.

Contradicting this account, the Imo police command clarified that Joe Ajaero was not taken into custody but rather placed in protective custody to prevent potential harm from a hostile crowd. The altercation reportedly stemmed from a heated argument between the NLC president and individuals who resisted the picketing of the Imo airport.

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Tony Ojukwu, the executive secretary of NHRC, called for accountability for those responsible for the alleged mistreatment of Joe Ajaero.
