Edo State’s Deputy Governor, Philips Shaibu, has made serious allegations against Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming that a plot to impeach him is underway. In an effort to protect his position as Deputy Governor of the South-South State, Shaibu has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

The lawsuit lists several defendants, including the Inspector General of Police, State Security Service, Edo Governor, Edo Speaker, and Edo Chief Judge. According to Shaibu, Governor Obaseki is allegedly utilizing security operatives, as well as the Edo Speaker and Chief Judge, to orchestrate the plot for his impeachment.

In an affidavit, Shaibu expressed his concerns, stating, “I know that this case is all about the action of the 3rd Defendant in preventing me from carrying out the functions of my office as Deputy Governor of Edo and using the 1st and 2nd Defendants to harass, intimidate, and embarrass me with the 4th and 5th Defendants in tandem with the desire of the 3rd Defendant to impeach me.”

The rift between Governor Obaseki and Deputy Governor Shaibu reportedly began after Shaibu was seen in a viral video with Senator Adams Oshiomhole during the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in Abuja.

Following this incident, the Governor allegedly invited all members of the Edo Assembly to discuss the matter in Benin, excluding his Deputy.

Upon learning of the meeting, Shaibu hurriedly drove to the Governor’s mansion but was denied entry by DSS operatives, who claimed he was not on the list of invitees. This incident reportedly left the Deputy Governor feeling humiliated and prompted him to seek legal recourse to safeguard his job and career.

An aide of the Governor, however, dismissed Shaibu’s claims, stating that nobody wants him out of office and that the Deputy Governor is allegedly seeking the Governor’s endorsement for the gubernatorial race, a notion the Governor is not entertaining at the moment.

Governor Obaseki, according to credible sources, remains focused on governance and refuses to be provoked by Shaibu’s actions, dismissing them as attempts to “chase shadows.” The feud between the two officials continues, and the court will now decide the outcome of the contentious matter.
